Recirculating Vortex Combustor ("RVC")

Challenge:

  • Flame stabilization requires creation of low velocity regions
  • Low emissions requires lean conditions (excess air)
  • But lean conditions cause instabilities, flame blow out

Idea:

  • Trap the recirculation zone between two physical bodies to extend lean flammability limits - "Trapped Vortex Combustor"
  • The cavity flow is protected from the surrounding flowfield
